I was watching TV this morning and saw my old college roommate Nabeel Gareeb on CNBC. He is now the CEO of MEMC Electronics which is a $2B manufacturer of wafers.

When the rest of us were in college partying, he was up studying or working. His only vices were cars and speeding. He had a Haulin’ Ass poster taped to his door proudly displayed with a collection of speeding tickets! Other than that, this guy was always very studious, one of the smartest kids in class and destined to be successful. Good luck Nabby!

We went to Harvey Mudd College in Claremont and studied engineering. He was a foreign student from Pakistan.

Nabeel is making millions while employees at the sherman tx plant are starving to death. he shuts the company down every qtr for 4 to 5 weeks, he’s been doing this for the last year. employees have to work their asses off the last month of the qtr so they can fullfill orders. the plant is very understaffed, then he shuts the plant down for a month or longer, most employees have to file unemployment claims just to survive.
he also treats his employees like shit

BTW -I wasn’t bragging. I haven’t even seen the guy for over 15 years. All I had said was that he was a smart, studious and very driven guy when he was in college. He may have changed a bit in the last 20 years!

In the Sherman plant we only have 100-125 hrly. employees left-out of thoes,50-75 were the ones out of the orig. T.I. when Nab. took over in 2002, he took our penison even though we all had been grandfathered, the law was not written in our favor we were not 50 or didn’t have 25 years of service.Since he does not abide by contracts we were screwed. We have worked hard to have to be singled out and victimized by reverse discrimination. Also T.I. in one of the first few meetings had paperwork drawn up to goodwill millions of assets to Memc,didn’t take them long to get the picture of Nab.with the company soon being called Middle Eastern Materials Company by the Employees. The smoke & mirrors, it started out with a image to create to the public, so with the money shifting from our Penisons to profits,times we would set around all day with not much work,the parking lot was full- good image builder to the public not realizing the employees and community long range negitive impact. Nothing like Bill & Melinda Gates that give back to the community. City of Sherman got screwed on the part of the contract of X amount of employees for x amount of time. Started using contract Employees which made one-third to one-half of an average employee. Most did not make enough to survive unless helped by family member ,roomate or etc. When tax abatement ended so did the temps. Throughout the plant started selling off machines, tables anything to minimize to help profits. We had a minimum amount of rest rooms to use seems during the overuse we had water leaks that were neglected which turned to a serious problem. Workers had Hazard tape outside restroom, mask on whlile taking out walls, workers talked about the black mold — wondered why everone was not sick. Do you think we were notified about the problem? Several had serious accidents during times when fewer employees doing more work — some not settled — more neglect only people now. LAZY AMERICANS ! Time goes on the pyramid is growing — need more profits — slow to no pay to customers, vendors, out of parts cann’t get untlll paid. Small community, lots of talk when payments late,always at end of qtr.goals before bills. NOW LET’S FIGURE HOW TO TAKE some of their vac.away. WE will give them 2 options, old plan- new plan- have metting to explain, form to sign if you do not sign you will default to new plan. Deadline came ,Wanda out of plant ,no meeting we defaulted due to waiting on meeting to make an informed choice. So all who went to that plan lost vacation. Let’s add to the profit. Raw poly is in great demand, we can name our price$$$$$$ Make 4-5 times as much—– shut plant down send people home use up vac. GOV. FUNDING SOLAR—LETS MAKE A DEAL $$$$$$$$$$$$$ more profits,l we will go ring the bell at Wall Street-KEEP SENDING EMPLOYEES HOME. MORE PROFITS. WE would hope we have starved them out by now,take their overtime. Look at the investor—profits-profits-profits- as they buy in I’ll sell,the bonuses have been great for me and the board,I should be rid of most of the employees by now. O no had a R&M order parts for safety of machines too much money taken out of Profits, back them out get rid of him. Stocks dumped, people eliminated we finally got penison set up in accounts.No wonder we never got pension statement for years,always put off or were working on that . Now It’ time to dump this baby or what ever works out best for us. One problem the stock market crashed lots of scrutiny , Perfect timing put the blame on the economy. Perfect timing. If that does not work tell them you were off your meds. That is when corp. says things that gets around. But you have our money that and your meds is all you need. THEY ALSO TOLD YOU WERE DISCUSSING MONEY ONE DAY– AND MADE COMMENT YOU COULD HAVE YOUR FAMILY KILLED FOR THAT. JUST POLL EMPLOYEES ON HOSTIL WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HOW HEALTH AND STD WORKS. ALSO TEC. ASKS US ALL THE TIME WHY WE SHUT DOWN WHEN OUR COMPANY MAKES SUCH HUGE PROFITS. I WOULDN’T ADMIT HE WAS MY FRIEND.
ONE MORE THING I HAVE LOST ABOUT 100,000.00 TO DATE THE BIG PROBLEM IS WHEN HE TOOK OUR PENSION HE TOOK OUR MEDICAL INS. AFTER CAUSING SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS FOR ALOT OF PEOPLE. MANY EMPLOYEES HAVE BEEN ASKED BY THEIR FAMILY DR. WHAT IS GOING ON OUT AT MEMC AND SEE THE PROBLEMS IT HAS CAUSED. WE ARE ON OUR 5TH OR 6TH PERSONAL MANAGER. WE HAVE HAD SOME VERY GOOD CHRISTAIN PEOPLE THAT WERE FORCED TO QUIT BECAUSE THEY WOULD NOT LIE, OR CHEAT TO KEEP THEIR JOB. YOU KNOW FOR 35-40 YEARS OF SERVICE I could have retired on 2-3 hundred thousand that would have meet my plan if he had not stole it from me. He makes that in a half a sec. It’s over I am through……

I am very sorry to hear that Nabby screwed you out of your pension. This appears to be a common theme (unfortunately).
He was never ruthless in college. Always very driven to the point of being excessive but always decent.
Now that he is gone from MEMC, hope that you are able to recover.

For those of you who aren’t quite familiar with our system of political economy: we live in a capitalist society. This means the government socializes corporate losses and privatizes profits. I read the comments here and can’t but help NOT feel sorry for all those complaining: BooHoo Nabeel took my pension and BooHoo Nabeel made me work for nothing! My advice, get over it, move to another country or get seriously involved in the political process to enact real laws not dubious, feel good ones. And those of you from Texas, who overwhelming voted for Dubya not once but twice; you got your just desserts.
BTW, MEMC is owned by a Private Equity (PE) firm. Do you know how PE companies make money? Yep, that’s right, you buy an undervalued asset by borrowing large sums of money from banks; you cut operating costs severely to pay for the interest expenses and the resulting profits that manifest themselves get translated into a high return on equity which Wall Street loves. You take the company public, cash out your stock and repeat the cycle again. And oh by the way, your taxes on the capital gains are only charged at a rate less than <15% thanks to Dubya, Cheney and their ilk.
So the next time you go out and vote think long and hard about the issues that confront you.

I worked at MEMC St Peters there they called him Nabeel GREED. Read this article http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2008/0421/074.html It shows what kind of a person he is. He broke contracts with customers and employees. The one good thing he did do was unite all the employees from the highest positions to the lowest by giving them a common enemy. I hope no other company gives him a chance to do what he did to us to other employees.
I was “google-ing” some of the people I used to work with at International Rectifier when I came across the article in Forbes. At first I was excited to hear that someone I had been in the same room with was taking on such large responsibilities (and salaries). But after reading the blogs here it got me thinking back to when I worked there. Alot of what is being said here also occurred there but not so blatantly. At I.R. we had our manufacturing processes shut down and moved out of the country (kinda like the Dubya move- but with no voting…), then people were given not so generous severence packages. Then a year later we still needed to cut operating costs so more people were asked to resign. However it was never management. It was always the worker bees. You know, the ones who actually produce. This after people were told that they did a miraculous job in reducing “die-free packaging costs”. Anyways, I am very sorry to hear that this type of management is not only practiced but classified with a cool name like “Private Equity (PE) firm” and therefore becomes acceptable. This country is about the people, all of the people and every man is created equal. From the worker flipping the switches to the person writing the checks and that should always come first before the dollar. You know, the current financial climate is 100% due to this behavior- and I will be happy to have words with anyone who says otherwise. Capitalism is fine until it is you who becomes the one “capitalized” upon. I guess that’s why people are speaking up starting with the President’s office. Now CEOs salaries. Next “Capitalist” waiting in line please… Your number is being called. 🙂

I think the system took you guys out, not the man.
NG is family and i know him personally. Maybe as a businessman he’s shrewd but as an uncle he is amazing, kind and great fun. I say why not be shrewd. he worked his ass off to get to where he is. How many foreigners especially from thirdworld countries like Pakistan do we know who made it to the top and kicked white ass? Very few. Had he been white none of the above nuisance would have been blogged. Think about it – its not him its who he is. People would kill to get into his shoes and i say he deserves it. No one know how much he struggled and what he had to go through in his early teens.
